How to Take Cordyceps Mushroom: Forms, Dosage and a Tea Recipe

How to take cordyceps?

Last updated: June 2026
This guide is regularly reviewed with new insights on cordyceps.

You may have this remarkable mushroom at home, have read about the properties of cordyceps, and are now wondering the best way to use it. We discuss the forms, the dosage and share a simple recipe for cordyceps tea.

Cordyceps Capsules

One of the most common ways is to take cordyceps as a capsule, once or twice a day. Because cordyceps is mostly associated with energy, many people prefer to take it in the morning, so it does not get in the way of falling asleep at night. The amount per capsule differs per brand, so always follow the recommended dosage on the package.

Cordyceps Powder

If you would rather not swallow capsules, powder is a nice alternative. You can buy cordyceps powder or open a capsule and mix the contents into your morning drink or a smoothie.

Liquid Cordyceps Extract

Cordyceps also comes as a liquid extract, which you easily stir into your drinks. Because an extract can be more potent, follow the dosage on the bottle. With our extract, a commonly used guideline is around 15 drops per day, or at a moment when you could use an energy boost.

Making Cordyceps Tea

Making cordyceps tea

If you want cordyceps as a tea, a longer steeping time is the secret: the longer you steep, the better the valuable compounds are released. Many people describe the taste as umami, with earthy, nutty notes.

  1. Step 1: Boil water
Bring about 250 ml of water to the boil.
  2. Step 2: Add cordyceps
Place 6 to 8 fruiting bodies or about 1 teaspoon of cordyceps powder in a pot and pour the hot water over it.
  3. Step 3: Let it steep
Cover the pot and let the tea steep for about 15 minutes. A longer steep time gets more out of the mushroom.
  4. Step 4: Season
Strain the tea and add fresh ginger and/or lemon to taste. Drink it preferably in the morning and enjoy.

Tip: Whichever form you choose, start gently and see how your body responds. Cordyceps is mostly associated with energy, so taking it in the morning works most pleasantly for many people.

Cordyceps is a food supplement for support, not a substitute for medical treatment. Do you take medication, are you pregnant or do you have complaints? Then consult a doctor first.
