Shamanic Chime with Kenari and Bendo - Handcrafted Natural Seed Sound Maker

When the breeze moves through it, you get a sound pattern you'll want to hear again and again. This chime is a beautiful piece of Balinese craft that fits any space. The lighter kenari seeds produce a bright yet delicate, warm tone. The darker bendo seeds resonate deeper and fuller. Together they create a melody that keeps drawing you in - calming and meditative, like a quiet stream that never stops flowing.

The wooden frame is handmade by Balinese craftspeople who've practiced this work for years. The seeds hang on threads with just enough freedom to move and resonate. The alternating pattern of light and dark seeds isn't just pleasant to look at - it creates a lovely tonal quality.

How kenari and bendo work together

Kenari seeds come from the Moluccas and are known for their clear, pure tone. They're solid enough to last for years and have a natural hardness that keeps the sound crisp. Bendo seeds are larger and heavier, which produce lower frequencies. In a gentle breeze, the two create a harmony - an organic interplay between high and low that seems to flow naturally.

You can hang the chime where it catches the breeze, or use it intentionally in a session. Some people tap it gently at the start of meditation, others use it as an acoustic instrument in group work.

Made in Bali

These chimes are crafted in small workshops in Bali where they make instruments for ceremonies and daily use. The wood comes from sustainably managed forests, the seeds are collected locally. Everything is done by hand, so each piece carries its own character - no two chimes sound exactly the same.

The frame measures roughly 25-30 cm wide, the seeds hang about 40-50 cm down. Sizes can vary slightly between pieces. It's simple to hang.

Where to use it

  • In your meditation space for soft background sounds during practice
  • By an open window where it can catch the breeze
  • In the garden or on a balcony as a natural sound element
  • In a healing practice room where you work with sound
  • During group sessions as an acoustic anchor point

The sound is subtle enough for daily use yet has enough presence to work with intentionally. If you appreciate singing bowls or tingsha bells, this chime will appeal to you - with a more continuous, flowing character.

Care

It needs very little maintenance. You can hang it outdoors, though in European climates it's best to place it in a sheltered spot or bring it inside occasionally to keep it looking its best. The seeds may darken slightly from sun and weather, but that's natural and barely affects the sound. Wipe the wood with a dry cloth now and then.

What is the difference between kenari and bendo seeds in a shamanic wind chime?

Kenari seeds originate from the Moluccas and produce a bright, high-pitched tone thanks to their natural hardness and lighter weight. Bendo seeds are larger and heavier, giving them a deeper, fuller frequency. In this shamanic chime both seed types are alternated on the hanging threads, so that every breeze or gentle touch creates an organic interplay between high and low tones. This layered sound profile is characteristic of traditional Balinese sound instruments and has been used in ceremonial and meditative practices for generations.

How do you use a Balinese seed chime in a sound healing session?

You can hang the chime where it catches the breeze, or hold it and gently tap or sway it by hand. At the opening of a session, a brief sound impulse provides an acoustic cue to centre the group's attention. During a sound healing you can alternate the chime with singing bowls or tingsha bells: the continuous, flowing sound of the seeds offers a soft acoustic layer underneath. Can the Shamanic Chime withstand outdoor conditions?

The chime is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, but in European climates it is wise to hang it in a sheltered location or bring it inside during bad weather. The kenari and bendo seeds are naturally sturdy and retain their sound quality for years. Sun and weather exposure may cause the seeds to darken slightly in colour, which is a normal, purely cosmetic process that barely affects the tonal quality. You can wipe the wooden frame occasionally with a dry cloth to keep it in good condition.
