Salvia divinorum contains salvinorin A, one of the most potent naturally occurring psychoactive compounds in the world. Unlike other psychedelics, it works via kappa-opioid receptors instead of serotonin receptors. What do the salvia extract strengths mean?
Salvia extracts are indicated by a ratio (e.g. 5x, 10x, 20x, 40x) showing how many grams of leaf have been concentrated into 1 gram of extract. A 40x extract thus contains 40 times the salvinorin A of plain leaf. Beginners should always start with the lowest strength (5x) — salvinorin A works via kappa-opioid receptors, a unique mechanism fundamentally different from other psychedelics.
Is salvia legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, Salvia divinorum and salvinorin A are not listed under the Dutch Opium Act and are fully legal. Salvia is freely available as a botanical product in the Netherlands. However, countries like Belgium, Denmark and Italy have restrictions — always check legislation in your own country.
