Why does valerian tincture have such a distinctive smell?

The strong, earthy odour of valerian comes from valerianic acid and isovalerianic acid, two volatile compounds released from the root during extraction. While the smell may be off-putting to some, these very compounds are responsible for the traditionally valued properties of the plant. The scent is actually a sign of a concentrated, potent extract. If the smell bothers you, try mixing the drops into a strongly flavoured drink. Learn more in our blog have you been using valerian root wrong?

When is the best time to take valerian tincture?

The recommended dosage is 15 drops three times daily with water. For sleep support, many users take the final dose about 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. The first two doses can be spread throughout the day, for instance at breakfast and lunch. Valerian has a cumulative effect, meaning regular use over a longer period often yields better results than occasional use.

What is the difference between valerian tincture and valerian capsules?

A tincture is a liquid extract in an alcohol base, whereas capsules typically contain dried root powder. The advantage of a tincture is that the active compounds are already in dissolved form and are therefore absorbed more quickly by the body. You can also adjust the dosage more precisely by varying the number of drops. The 35% alcohol base acts as a solvent that extracts both water-soluble and fat-soluble components from the root.

Can valerian tincture be combined with other herbs?

Valerian is traditionally often combined with other calming herbs such as passionflower, hops and lemon balm. This combination may enhance the desired properties. When combining tinctures, keep track of the total alcohol content. Always start with lower dosages when combining multiple herbal extracts and consult a specialist if in doubt.
