Why do the Yawanawa use Tsunu ash in their blends?
Tsunu (Platycyamus regnellii) is a hardwood tree from the Amazon rainforest whose bark produces a highly alkaline ash when burned at high temperature. This alkalinity enhances absorption of active plant compounds through the nasal mucosa. The Yawanawa consider Tsunu one of their most powerful ceremonial ingredients. What makes the Yawanawa unique as an Amazonian people?
The Yawanawa number over 7,000 members along the Gregorio River in Acre and are one of the few tribes that actively combine cultural traditions with eco-tourism and international exchange. Their annual Mariri festival attracts visitors from around the world. They are known for elaborate kené tattoo patterns symbolising their connection to the spirit world.
How are Yawanawa blends prepared?
The preparation is overseen by experienced pajés (shamans). Tsunu bark is slowly burned into a fine white ash, then combined with finely ground ceremonial herbs in a hardwood mortar. The mixture is hand-ground for days into a microscopically fine powder. Each batch is ceremonially blessed before use.
