How to Make Magic Truffle Tea: Recipe, Tips & Lemon Tek

how to make magic truffle tea

Chewing fresh magic truffles is not for everyone. The earthy taste is intense, and the fibrous texture often causes nausea in the first 30 minutes of a trip. Truffle tea solves both problems: gentler on your stomach, faster onset, and the potency stays fully intact when prepared correctly.

This guide is regularly updated with the latest insights on psilocybin, preparation and safety.

Why truffle tea?

Three reasons many experienced users prefer tea over chewing:

  • Less nausea. Straining removes the fibrous plant material that puts the heaviest load on your stomach.
  • Faster onset. Psilocybin in liquid form is absorbed more quickly. Expect 20 to 40 minutes instead of 45 to 75 minutes when chewing.
  • More predictable course. Faster absorption means a shorter, more intense peak, which some people prefer over the gradual curve of chewing.

Important: magic truffles are legal for adults in the Netherlands, but they are not suitable for everyone. People predisposed to psychosis, with heart conditions, or taking SSRI antidepressants should not use psilocybin. Never combine with alcohol or other substances. Before you start, read our guide on set & setting.

The basic recipe: magic truffle tea in 5 steps

chopping truffles for tea

  1. Chop the truffles finely
The smaller, the better. Fine chopping increases the surface area exposed to hot water, which extracts more psilocybin. Aim for pieces a few millimetres across. A pestle and mortar or a quick blitz in a blender works just as well.
  2. Boil water and let it cool to around 70 °C
This is the step where most people go wrong. Psilocybin breaks down at temperatures above 80 °C. Boil your water separately, take it off the heat, and wait two to three minutes before pouring it over the truffles. A kitchen thermometer is not overkill if you want to nail it.
  3. Pour the water over the truffles and steep 15 to 20 minutes
Stir well a few times. Use this time to set your intention, put your phone on airplane mode, and queue up your music. A trip starts with preparation, not with the first sip.
  4. Strain the tea
Pour through a fine tea strainer or sieve. Press the truffle pieces firmly with the back of a spoon; a meaningful share of the psilocybin is still locked in there. Discard the spent fibres afterwards.
  5. Sip slowly
A spoon of honey, a slice of ginger, or a sprig of mint takes the edge off the taste and helps with nausea. Drink over ten to fifteen minutes, not in one go. Then no food for two hours.

Bonus: the Lemon Tek trick

lemon magic truffle tea

Lemon Tek is a variation where you soak finely chopped truffles in lemon juice before adding water. The acid partially converts psilocybin into psilocin: the active compound that works on your brain. The result is a faster onset (often within 15 minutes), a stronger peak, and a shorter trip of about three to four hours instead of four to six.

  1. Chop the truffles very finely
The finer, the better the acid can do its work. Some people purée them with a fork.
  2. Add fresh lemon juice
Juice of half a lemon to a full one, enough to cover all the pieces. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add warm water
Boil water, let it cool to around 70 °C, and pour over the mixture. Steep another 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Strain and drink
Strain into a mug, press the bits firmly, and drink. The taste is more sour than regular tea; honey helps.

Tea vs chewing: who should use what?

Aspect Tea Chewing Lemon Tek
Onset 20-40 min 45-75 min 10-20 min
Duration 4-5 hrs 4-6 hrs 3-4 hrs
Nausea Low Medium-high Very low
Peak intensity Standard More gradual Stronger
Beginner friendly Yes Yes Better not

Common mistakes

  • Using boiling water. Above 80 °C psilocybin breaks down quickly. You end up with a fancy mushroom broth that does nothing.
  • Truffle pieces too large. Whole truffles dropped in water barely steep. Chop them finely.
  • Tossing the truffle bits without pressing. A meaningful share of the psilocybin stays in the pulp if you do not press it firmly.
  • Drinking on a full stomach. Eat nothing for at least four hours before, and two hours after. An empty stomach gives a more reliable onset.
  • Eyeballing the dose. Weigh your truffles on a kitchen scale. A typical beginner dose is 5 to 10 grams of fresh truffles.

What does the science say about tea vs chewing?

There is little direct comparative research between oral intake and tea, but what we know about the pharmacokinetics of psilocybin points strongly in the same direction as user experience. The body converts psilocybin into psilocin before it reaches the bloodstream; this conversion partly happens in the stomach under the influence of acid. Research from Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research and the Imperial College Centre for Psychedelic Research shows that subjective effects are consistent regardless of administration form, but onset and peak vary with absorption speed.

The recent NEJM publication by Goodwin et al. (2022) on psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression used standardised oral doses; comparable absorption effects apply to tea, provided it is properly prepared.

Which truffles work best for tea?

Almost any fresh truffle works fine for tea. The choice is mostly about potency and the kind of experience you want:

A full comparison of varieties and strengths lives in our complete truffle guide. If you are looking at microdosing instead of a full trip, read our microdosing with truffles guide.

Tip: unopened fresh truffles keep for about a month in the fridge. Once opened: consume within 48 hours or freeze straight away, otherwise potency drops.

Storing and reheating

Truffle tea stores moderately well. A few hours at room temperature or in the fridge is fine, but reheating is not recommended: every additional heating costs more psilocybin. Make the tea fresh just before you settle in. Made too much by accident? Freeze it and use within a week.

What users report

Users frequently describe the switch from chewing to tea as a game-changer: less nausea in the first 30 minutes, a cleaner-feeling peak, and more mental room to experience the journey rather than focus on discomfort. A smaller group misses the gradual curve of chewing and goes back to the old method after a few attempts. Try both and see what fits.

Set, setting and safety

The intake is just a small part of a successful experience. Far more important are your mental state (set) and surroundings (setting). A quiet location, no obligations for twelve hours, a trusted person as a sitter, and a playlist that supports introspection: those are the building blocks of a good trip. For a complete preparation guide, read our Set & Setting guide and our music guide for magic trips.

Frequently asked questions about magic truffle tea

How many truffles do I use for one cup of tea?

For a first time or a light experience: 5 to 7.5 grams of fresh truffles. For an average trip: 10 to 15 grams. For an intense experience: 15 to 22.5 grams. Always weigh, and account for the specific potency of the strain. See the complete truffle guide for exact strength per variety.

Do I lose potency by straining?

If you press the truffle bits firmly with the back of a spoon: hardly. Most of the psilocybin is already in the liquid by then. You can also eat the squeezed-out fibres separately if you want to leave nothing on the table.

What is the difference between truffle tea and Lemon Tek?

In regular tea, hot water releases psilocybin which is converted to psilocin in your stomach. In Lemon Tek, citric acid does that conversion in advance: the onset is faster and the peak more intense, but the trip is shorter. Beginners are better off starting with the regular tea method.

Can I use dried truffles for tea?

Yes. Dried truffles are roughly ten times stronger than fresh, so divide your dose by ten. 1 gram dried equals about 10 grams fresh. Grind them finely before steeping.

How long does truffle tea keep?

A few hours at room temperature. In the fridge 24 hours, but potency slowly drops. Freezing for up to a week works; reheat only to below 70 °C. Fresh is always better.

Does tea work faster than chewing?

Yes, typically 15 to 30 minutes faster. Liquid absorbs more easily than solids, and the psilocybin is already extracted from the plant cells. An empty stomach speeds it up further.

Does ginger help against nausea?

Yes, freshly grated ginger or ginger tea mixed into your truffle tea works well for many people against mild nausea in the first phase. Honey and mint are popular additions that soften the taste without affecting the active compounds.

Can I combine truffle tea with other substances?

No. Never combine truffles with alcohol, other drugs, MAO inhibitors, or SSRI antidepressants. SSRIs largely block the effect and can in rare cases cause serotonin syndrome. Unsure about your medication? Speak to a doctor first.
