Which Kanna Suits You? Forms, Strengths and Moments

Last updated: July 2026
This guide is reviewed regularly with the current kanna forms in our range.

Kanna is not a single product. It comes as ground herb, as a concentrated extract, as full-spectrum powder, as drops, and even as gummies. Each form has its own strength and its own moment. Are you after something gentle for a first encounter, or a powerful extract? In this guide we line up the forms and help you choose what suits you. Want to know first what kanna is and how it works, start with our full kanna guide. Everything below is about making the right choice.

Different forms of kanna side by side

Kanna in short

Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a small succulent from South Africa, used there for centuries as a mood herb. Its active compounds, the mesembrine alkaloids, give kanna its characteristic, relaxing character. How strong that turns out depends mostly on the form you choose: a ground herb feels very different from a concentrated extract. That is what the rest of this guide is about.

The forms at a glance

Form What it is Lovely for
Ground herb The pure, finely ground plant A gentle introduction
Extract powder Concentrated, more focused and stronger Those who know what they want
Full-spectrum Extract with the full alkaloid profile A complete, natural effect
Liquid Drops Quick and on the go
Gummies & shots Fixed portion, tasty or easy On the go, without the fuss

Kanna in powder, extract and gummy form

From herb to powerful extract

Ground kanna: the beginning

The gentlest way to get to know kanna is the pure, ground herb. Our Kanna Shredded is the classic finely ground plant: mild, natural and easy to follow. New to this line-up is the Kanna ST Herba, also a ground Sceletium, and the Kanna UC40 Fortified Herba, where the herb gets an extra lift from some extract. Ideal if you want to start calmly.

Extract powder: more focused and stronger

If you want something stronger, the extract powders are next. They are concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Our new UC and ET line climbs neatly in strength: from the mild Kanna ETB Extract through the balanced Kanna UC1 Artisanal and the potent Kanna ET2 to the strongest, the Kanna ET4. There is also the well-loved Kannakki Super Intense. Curious why a good kanna extract takes so much craft? You can read it in our blog from seed to extract.

Full-spectrum: the complete profile

Full-spectrum extracts keep the plant's full alkaloid profile rather than isolating a single compound. That gives a rounded, natural effect. The Kanna FS10 is a gentle 10:1, a nice middle ground; the Kanna FS33 is a firm 33:1 for those more used to it.

Liquid: quick and on the go

Rather not weigh out powder? Then drops are handy. The Kanna Liquid Extract lets you dose easily without measuring, on the go too.

Gummies and shots: easy and tasty

For convenience there are fixed portions. The Kanna Cherry Gummies are a tasty, low-threshold way with a set amount per sweet. And the Kratom + Kanna shots combine both herbs in a handy single shot.

Which strength suits you?

The right choice mostly comes down to being honest about where you stand. Roughly, it climbs like this:

  • A gentle introduction: ground herb (Shredded or ST Herba). Soft and easy to follow.
  • A step further: a fortified herb (UC40) or a gentle full-spectrum (FS10 10:1).
  • More focused and stronger: the balanced extracts (ETB, UC1) or the FS33.
  • For the experienced user: the potent ET2 and the strongest, ET4.

The golden rule stays: start low. You can always take more, but never less. The exact amounts per form are covered in our kanna guide.

Kanna from mild herb to powerful extract

Which moment suits which kanna?

Besides strength, your moment matters too. Kanna has long been chosen to sit a little lighter in your own skin, and different forms suit different moments.

  • Unwinding after work: a mild form to close the day gently.
  • A social drink: something light where you stay present.
  • During the day, a little edge: a small, focused amount.

Our functional Kanna Dailies capsules are tuned to exactly those moments, with variants such as RELAX, FOCUS, PLAY, DREAM and DESIRE. Torn between kanna and another relaxing plant? Our comparison blue lotus vs kanna will help you further.

The nice thing is that you are not tied to one form. Many people keep a mild herb at home for weekdays and an extract for now and then. That way you choose whatever suits the moment each time.

Frequently asked questions about choosing kanna

Which kanna is best for a first time?

Start with the ground herb, such as Kanna Shredded or ST Herba. That is the gentlest form and the easiest to follow. Keep the amount modest; this way you ease into kanna's character before moving on to an extract if you like.

What is the difference between ground kanna and extract?

Ground kanna is the pure plant; an extract is a concentrated version of it. So an extract is considerably stronger per gram, which means you need far less. Want to get to know kanna gently? Choose the herb. After a more focused, stronger effect? Then an extract makes more sense.

Full-spectrum or a standardised extract, which do I choose?

A full-spectrum extract (such as FS10 or FS33) keeps the plant's full alkaloid profile, which gives a rounded, natural effect. A standardised extract aims more at a fixed strength. For a complete experience, choose full-spectrum; if you mainly want predictability, a standardised extract fits.

Which kanna form is handiest on the go?

The liquid form and the fixed portions. Drops such as the Kanna Liquid Extract dose quickly without weighing, and gummies or shots have a set amount per piece. Handy for on the go or when you don't want to measure out powder.

Are kanna gummies as strong as powder?

Gummies have a set amount per sweet, while with powder you decide the amount yourself. That makes gummies predictable and low-threshold, and powder flexible. How strong it ultimately feels depends on how much you take and on the form.

Which kanna suits relaxing or focus?

For a specific moment, the functional Kanna Dailies capsules are made, with variants such as RELAX, FOCUS and PLAY. After something more general, a mild form of kanna often works nicely to unwind. Choose above all based on the moment you have in mind.

How strong is kanna extract compared with the herb?

An extract is many times stronger than the same weight of ground herb, because the active compounds are concentrated. If you move from herb to an extract, start carefully and build up slowly. That keeps the experience pleasant and easy to follow.
