Nymphaea Caerulea Concentrated Tincture

Our Blue Lotus tincture is a concentrated liquid extract of Nymphaea caerulea — the Egyptian water lily used in rituals and ceremonies for thousands of years. A tincture draws the active alkaloids from the plant using an alcohol base, giving you a form that works faster than tea, is easier to dose than dried flowers and is simple to carry with you.

What is a Blue Lotus tincture?

A tincture is a liquid extract in which plant material has been steeped in alcohol for an extended period. The alcohol pulls the alkaloids — chiefly apomorphine and nuciferine — from the petals and holds them stably in solution. Our tincture is made from dried Blue Lotus flowers steeped in food-grade alcohol at a standardised ratio for a stable product from batch to batch.

The 15 ml bottle is enough for several dozen doses, depending on how many drops you use. The dropper cap makes sublingual dosing easy: let the drops fall under the tongue, hold for about half a minute before swallowing, and press the tongue gently against the palate to help absorption.

Action and chemistry

Blue Lotus contains two pharmacologically interesting alkaloids. Apomorphine is a dopamine receptor agonist that produces a lightly euphoric and calming feeling. Nuciferine affects both dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors and contributes to the relaxing action. The flower also contains flavonoids and anthocyanins — the latter give it the characteristic blue-purple colour.

In tincture form these compounds have already been drawn out of the plant and are immediately available, which brings the effect on more quickly than with tea. Effects usually begin within 15 to 30 minutes and last 2 to 4 hours.

How to use the tincture

Sublingual (under the tongue) is the recommended route for best results. Start with 5 to 10 drops and build up slowly to your personal preference. The alkaloids are absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes under the tongue, which speeds the action compared to swallowing.

  • Starter dose: 5 to 10 drops sublingually, held under the tongue for 30 seconds
  • Regular dose: 15 to 25 drops for a noticeable relaxing effect
  • Evening ritual: take 30 to 45 minutes before sleep for more vivid dreams
  • In a drink: can also be added to tea, herbal wine or warm milk

When is a tincture better than tea or flowers?

The tincture suits those who:

  • want a noticeable effect quickly, without brewing tea;
  • are looking for a small, portable product for travel or going out;
  • want to microdose drop by drop with precision;
  • would rather skip the taste of petals on the tongue.

For those wanting to experience the plant traditionally — as tea or in wine steeped according to the Egyptian recipe — the better choice is dried Blue Lotus flowers. For those wanting to avoid alcohol: there is also an alcohol-free extract on a glycerin base.

Combining with other herbs

Blue Lotus tincture combines well with other relaxing herbs, provided you have tried each on its own first to know your tolerance.

  • Chamomile or lavender — strengthens evening relaxation
  • Passionflower — for deeper calm
  • Kanna — for those wanting to combine the quiet of Blue Lotus with Kanna's social openness (see our Blue Lotus vs Kanna comparison)

Avoid combinations with strongly sedating drugs, antidepressants (SSRIs, MAO inhibitors) and Parkinson's medication without consulting a doctor first.

Storage and shelf life

The tincture is long-lasting thanks to the alcohol base. Store the bottle upright in a dark, dry cupboard at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight — the alkaloids are light-sensitive. With proper storage a tincture stays effective for 2 to 3 years.

What is the difference between Blue Lotus tincture and tea?

A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract where the active alkaloids have already been drawn out of the plant by alcohol. Tea extracts the same compounds on the spot from dried flowers — less efficient, because apomorphine and nuciferine dissolve poorly in water. A tincture therefore works faster (15 to 30 min) and more strongly per gram of plant than tea, and is easier to microdose.

How many drops of Blue Lotus tincture should I take?

Start with 5 to 10 drops sublingually for a first encounter. A regular dose for noticeable relaxation lies around 15 to 25 drops. Wait at least half an hour before building up — the action comes on gradually, and what feels mild after 10 minutes may be exactly right after 25.

How long does Blue Lotus tincture last?

The action sets in sublingually within 15 to 30 minutes and lasts 2 to 4 hours. When swallowed it takes slightly longer (30 to 45 minutes onset) but the duration is comparable. For evening use: take 30 to 45 minutes before going to bed.

Can you swallow the tincture instead of taking it sublingually?

You can, but it works less efficiently. Sublingually the alkaloids are absorbed through the mucous membranes under the tongue straight into the bloodstream — faster and with less loss. Swallowing sends the alkaloids through the digestive tract and the liver, which removes part of the action.

Can I combine the tincture with tea or wine?

Yes. Adding a few drops to a cup of chamomile tea or a glass of lotus wine deepens the ritual without unsafely strengthening the action. Avoid combinations with strongly sedating herbs or medication without first testing how you respond to each on its own.

How long does the tincture keep after opening?

Thanks to the alcohol base, a tincture is long-lasting — 2 to 3 years with proper storage. Keep the bottle upright in a dark, dry cupboard at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight, since the alkaloids are light-sensitive.

Is Blue Lotus tincture safe during pregnancy?

As a precaution, use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended. There is insufficient research into safety for these groups, and apomorphine may theoretically affect hormonal and neurological processes. Consult a midwife or doctor before using anything.

Safety

For adults only. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take medication: ask your doctor first. Do not drive or operate machinery after intake. Keep out of reach of children.
