Mad Honey, also known as Himalayan Cliff Honey or Deli Bal, is a rare honey collected by the giant honey bee (Apis dorsata laboriosa) at high altitude in the Himalayas. Mad Honey contains grayanotoxin from Rhododendron nectar. It has been used for centuries in Nepal and Turkey. The honey is harvested at great risk from cliffs at high altitude.
The Gurung tribe in Nepal climbs with rope ladders to bee nests on rock faces at 2,500+ metres. The giant honey bee Apis dorsata laboriosa builds its nests on these inaccessible locations.
Store Mad Honey at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. The honey does not crystallise and keeps for months in the original packaging.
