The Power of Shungite: Origin, Types and Use

Last updated: June 2026
This guide is regularly reviewed with new insights on shungite and its origin.

The Protective Power of Shungite

Shungite is known for its protective effect against the harmful radiation you deal with every day, for instance from mobile phones, microwaves and computers. The mineral is also traditionally used to cleanse and ground both the body and the living space. Many people experience shungite as a stone that offers calm and protection and supports vitality, even in busy or restless times.

What makes shungite extra special is its scientific side: it is a rare mineral made up almost entirely of carbon that naturally contains fullerenes, spherical carbon molecules discovered in 1985, for which the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded in 1996. That unique carbon structure gives shungite its metallic sheen and its name in the mineral world.

Shungite mineral from Karelia

Where Does Shungite Come From?

Real shungite comes from one region in the world: the Republic of Karelia in north-western Russia. The best-known site is the Zazhoginsky mine. Shungite from this area is known for its high quality, with more than 30% carbon, plenty of minerals and a high energy potential. If a stone comes from elsewhere, strictly speaking it is not shungite but a related carbon rock.

Water Filtration and the Skin

One use of shungite is very concrete: it has long been used to filter water. Thanks to its carbon structure, shungite binds certain organic compounds and impurities, similar to how activated carbon works. In Karelia, so-called shungite water therefore has a long tradition. Enthusiasts also traditionally use shungite powder on the skin: mixed with water into a smooth paste, ideally with shungite water, so the valuable fullerenes and carbon come into their own. Build it up slowly: start with a few minutes and see how your skin responds.

Elite Shungite Versus Regular Shungite

Elite shungite

Elite shungite, also called noble, silver or grade 1, is the rarest and most carbon-rich variant, with a striking silvery sheen. It is regarded as the most powerful form and is therefore pricier and somewhat more brittle. Regular black shungite contains less carbon, is sturdier and is easily worked into pendants, pyramids and spheres.

Type Carbon content Feature
Elite (noble / grade 1) Very high (up to ~98%) Silvery sheen, rare, breaks easily
Regular (black) shungite Around 30-50% Matte black, sturdier, carved into shapes

Shungite in Different Forms

Shungite pendants

The shungite pendant is not only a beautiful piece of jewellery, but is also worn to stay balanced and grounded throughout the day. Anyone who works a lot with screens or has a busy environment often chooses to keep the stone close.

Shungite pyramids

The shungite pyramid is placed as a protective and decorative object, for instance on your desk near a computer and wifi. Enthusiasts use the pyramid to harmonise the living space against the electromagnetic radiation of TVs, computers, microwaves, wifi, Bluetooth and 5G. Pyramids come in various sizes, from 5 up to 15 cm.

There is also raw shungite and shungite powder, alongside bracelets, necklaces, malas and pendulums. So there is a fitting form for every use and taste.

Tip: New, raw shungite can release a little black powder. Rinse stones well under the tap before first use until the water stays clear.

How to Recognise Real Shungite

Sadly, a rare mineral attracts fakes too. Watch for these points when buying:

  • Colour: real shungite is deep black and, when raw, can rub off slightly.
  • Price: real shungite is not dirt cheap. A suspiciously low price is a warning sign.
  • Origin: reliable shungite comes from Karelia. Ask about the source.
  • Conductivity: real shungite, and especially elite, conducts electricity, which is very rare for a stone. You can test this carefully with a simple battery-and-bulb circuit; with real shungite the bulb lights up.

Users often describe shungite as a stone that brings calm and protection. A frequently heard experience is that people appreciate both its fine, deep-black appearance and the sense of protection from the radiation of everyday life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shungite

What exactly is shungite?

Shungite is a rare, carbon-rich mineral from Karelia in Russia. It naturally contains fullerenes, unusual carbon molecules, and is known for its protective and cleansing effect.

What is shungite used for?

Shungite is used for protection and grounding, often associated with the radiation of phones, wifi and computers. It also serves for water filtration and as a beautiful, decorative mineral at home.

What is the difference between elite and regular shungite?

Elite shungite (noble or grade 1) has a very high carbon content, a silvery sheen and is regarded as the most powerful form. Regular black shungite contains less carbon, is sturdier and is carved into pendants, pyramids and spheres.

Can you use shungite for water?

Yes, shungite is traditionally used as a filter material for water; thanks to its carbon structure it binds certain impurities. Rinse the stones well beforehand and follow the supplier's instructions.

How do I recognise real shungite?

Real shungite is deep black, not dirt cheap and comes from Karelia. Elite shungite in particular conducts electricity, which you can test carefully with a battery-and-bulb circuit. When in doubt, always ask about the origin.

How do I clean shungite?

Rinse the stone under lukewarm water and let it dry. Raw shungite can rub off a little at first; rinse until the water stays clear. Do not use harsh cleaning agents.
