How to Prepare for a Safe Magic Mushroom Trip

Preparing for a mushroom trip

Last updated: June 2026
This guide is regularly updated with the latest insights on tripping safely.

A first mushroom trip can be exciting, and even with experience, stepping into the unknown stays special. Still: the more you prepare, the more relaxed, safe and ready you feel. Together we'll explore the best ways to ensure a good, worthwhile mushroom experience, in six steps.

  1. The good old set and setting
Your 'set' is your mindset and emotional state; your 'setting' is your environment. Give yourself time to prepare and make sure you feel stable. Psychedelics work like amplifiers, so everything you feel becomes more intense. Trip in a calm, familiar space with little noise, privacy, clean water and a warm blanket. If you're with others, choose people you fully trust.
  2. Arrange a trip sitter
For your first time or a high dose, a sober trip sitter is strongly recommended. Someone who cares for you when you briefly can't makes a world of difference. Discuss your intentions and possible scenarios beforehand, so you know what to expect.
  3. Choose the right dose
You can't take a physical overdose of psilocybin, but too high a dose can be mentally heavy if you're unprepared. A low dose is 1 to 1.5 grams, a normal one 2 to 3 grams, and anything over 3.5 grams dried is high. For truffles, multiply the dose 3 to 4 times. Some species, like Copelandia, are far stronger: know your strain.
  4. Pick the right music
Gentle, flowing, non-lyrical music usually works best. Choose something positive and soothing, and feel free to switch during your trip. Check our music guide for the best playlists.
  5. The challenging part: letting go
When your sense of time and space shifts, the urge to resist is natural. But resistance is often what causes a bad trip. Try to let go, surrender and flow with it. Close your eyes, know it will pass, talk to your trip sitter, or change your environment if it gets too much.
  6. Take time to integrate
Like preparation, the aftercare deserves time. Reflect, meditate or journal in the weeks afterwards. Did something surface that needs attention? Give yourself room to work with new insights at a calm pace.

Preparing for a mushroom trip

What if you feel overwhelmed?

If you do feel overwhelmed, try this:

  • Close your eyes and surrender to what is. Don't try to control the flow; let the trip take you along. Challenging isn't the same as bad.
  • Know that your perception of time, space and thoughts can change. That's normal and will pass. You're not stuck anywhere forever.
  • Talk to your trip sitter. Ask for a listening ear or confirmation that you're safe. If no one is present, call a trusted friend who has experience themselves.
  • Change your environment or music. Inside or outside, a different room, or shifting your focus elsewhere can do a lot.

How to prepare for a mushroom trip?

Good to know: Don't combine mushrooms with other substances or medication. Take them on an empty or light stomach. Check the legality where you live (fresh and dried mushrooms are banned in the Netherlands; truffles and grow kits are legal). Don't use mushrooms if you have a mental health condition without consulting your doctor, and not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Don't drive or operate machinery under the influence.

Frequently asked questions about a safe mushroom trip

What's the best preparation for a mushroom trip?

A good set and setting, a sober trip sitter, the right dose and suitable music. Feel good and stable, choose a calm, familiar place and take time to prepare.

What dose is safe to start with?

Beginners usually stick to 1 to 1.5 grams dried for a mild experience. For truffles, multiply that 3 to 4 times. Always start low and know the strength of your strain.

Do I really need a trip sitter?

Especially for your first time or a high dose, a sober, trusted trip sitter is strongly recommended. It makes the experience safer and calmer.

What do I do if the trip gets too intense?

Breathe calmly, let go instead of resisting, change your environment or music, and talk to your trip sitter. Also read our guide on avoiding a bad trip.

Why is integration afterwards important?

The real value of a trip often emerges in the weeks afterwards, as you process and apply your insights. Read more in our guide on psychedelic integration.

Fresh or dried: which is better for a first trip?

For beginners, fresh or dried matters less than good preparation and a low dose. Read the difference in our blog on fresh vs dried mushrooms.
