How to Make Magic Mushroom Chocolates: Recipes and Tips

magic mushroom chocolates recipe guide

Last updated: March 2026
This recipe and guide are regularly updated with the latest tips and insights.

Chocolate and mushrooms might sound like an unusual pairing, but it is actually one of the oldest ways to combine dried mushrooms or truffles with food. Cacao has held a special place in ceremonial use throughout history, and the combination with psilocybin-containing ingredients is a tradition reaching deep into Mesoamerican cultures.

Making your own magic mushroom chocolates is surprisingly straightforward and gives you complete control over dosage and ingredients. In this guide, we share two tried-and-tested recipes, from simple to entirely homemade.

Disclaimer: This recipe is intended for educational purposes. Next Level Smart Shop does not encourage consumption of psilocybin-containing products. Always check the local legislation in your country or region. In the Netherlands, magic truffles are legally available.

Essential Tips Before You Start

  • Always use dried mushrooms or truffles. Fresh specimens contain too much moisture and will not blend properly with chocolate.
  • Avoid excessive heating. Psilocybin degrades at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius. Always work with a bain-marie and allow melted chocolate to cool slightly before adding your mushrooms.
  • Chop or grind your mushrooms as finely as possible. A coffee grinder works best for even distribution.
  • Store your chocolates in the refrigerator or a cool, dry place.

Calculating Your Dosage

Example calculation: If you add 12 grams of dried mushrooms or truffles to your chocolate mixture and make 6 chocolates, each piece will contain approximately 2 grams. Bear in mind that potency varies by species. Copelandia Cyanescens, for example, is four to five times stronger than Psilocybe Cubensis.

An accurate kitchen scale is indispensable. Always weigh your ingredients and calculate the dosage per chocolate before you begin. Prefer a mild experience? Start with a low dose per piece. Also read our blog on microdosing for more information on subtle dosages.

Recipe 1: Magic Mushroom Chocolates "Lazy Edition"

magic mushroom chocolates recipe easy

This recipe is ideal if you want to get started quickly and simply. You only need shop-bought chocolate and your dried ingredients.

What You Will Need

  • Your chosen dosage of dried mushrooms or truffles
  • Bars of chocolate (dark, milk or white to taste)
  • Chocolate moulds or a non-stick baking tray
  • A sharp knife and chopping board (or coffee grinder)
  • A large saucepan
  • Water (one-third of the pan)
  • A heat-resistant bowl

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mushrooms
Finely chop your dried mushrooms or truffles, or grind them into a fine powder using a coffee grinder.
  2. Place chocolate in the bowl
Break your chocolate bars into small pieces and place them in the heat-resistant bowl.
  3. Melt using bain-marie
Fill the saucepan one-third with water and place on medium heat. Set the bowl of chocolate on top of the pan. Ensure no water gets into the chocolate. Stir regularly.
  4. Cool the chocolate
Once fully melted, remove the bowl from the water. Let the chocolate cool for a few minutes but keep it in liquid form. This is important: chocolate that is too hot can degrade the active compounds.
  5. Add mushrooms and mix
Add your chopped or ground mushrooms to the cooled chocolate. Stir thoroughly to achieve an even distribution.
  6. Pour into moulds
Carefully pour the mixture into your chocolate moulds or onto the baking tray. Distribute as evenly as possible.
  7. Set in the refrigerator
Place the moulds in the refrigerator and leave to set for at least 1-2 hours. Store in a cool place.

Recipe 2: Magic Mushroom Chocolates "Made from Scratch"

Prefer to do everything yourself? With this recipe, you create the chocolate entirely from scratch. The result has a richer flavour and you have complete control over every ingredient.

What You Will Need

  • Your chosen dosage of dried mushrooms or truffles
  • 1/2 cup cocoa butter or dairy butter
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup raw cacao powder
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup honey, agave syrup or cane sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: spices such as cinnamon, cardamom or chilli flakes
  • Chocolate moulds or non-stick baking tray
  • Knife and chopping board (or coffee grinder)
  • Large saucepan and heat-resistant bowl

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mushrooms
Finely chop your dried mushrooms or truffles, or grind them into a fine powder using a coffee grinder.
  2. Heat the water
Fill the saucepan one-third with water and place on low heat.
  3. Melt the butter and oil
Place the cocoa butter (broken into smaller pieces) and coconut oil in the bowl. Set the bowl on the warm water and let everything melt slowly. The water should be warm but not boiling.
  4. Add cocoa powder
Add the cocoa powder and stir slowly until a smooth, homogeneous mixture forms.
  5. Sweeten and season
Remove the bowl from the water. Add your sweetener, salt and any optional spices. Stir well.
  6. Add mushrooms
Add your chopped or ground mushrooms to the mixture. Stir thoroughly to prevent lumps and ensure even distribution.
  7. Pour into moulds and set
Pour the mixture into your chocolate moulds or onto the baking tray. Place in the refrigerator and leave to set for at least 2 hours.

Tip: Use mushroom grow kits to cultivate your own ingredients. This way you know exactly what goes into your chocolates and can experiment with different strains such as Golden Teacher or McKennaii.

Which Chocolate Works Best?

Dark chocolate (70% cocoa or above) works best for mushroom chocolates. The intense flavour masks the earthy taste of the mushrooms more effectively than milk chocolate. Additionally, dark cacao contains theobromine, a mild stimulant that can complement the experience.

Consider working with ceremonial cacao for an even more authentic experience. Ceremonial cacao is unprocessed and contains the full spectrum of active compounds found in the cacao bean.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store your mushroom chocolates in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to four weeks. For longer storage, you can freeze them. Dried mushrooms retain their properties well, provided they are stored in a dry, cool environment.

Always label your chocolates clearly with both the total weight of mushrooms and the dosage per piece. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.

Other Ways to Prepare Mushrooms

Chocolates are not the only creative preparation method. Consider truffle tea as a simpler alternative. And for the musical accompaniment to your evening, check out our music guide for psychedelic experiences.

Safety and Responsible Use

Whether you are experimenting with recipes or trying a grow kit, safety comes first. A few key points:

  • Always start with a low dosage, particularly when trying a new strain or species.
  • Never use mushrooms if you have psychological conditions or are taking medication that may interact.
  • Ensure a comfortable environment and preferably have a sober trip sitter present. Read our guide to a safe trip.
  • Check the differences between mushrooms and truffles before starting your recipe.

Many home growers combine their harvest with cacao to make bonbons. The advantage over direct consumption: the taste is more pleasant and the dosage per bonbon can be controlled more precisely. A coffee grinder turns out to be the most popular tool for achieving an even distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions About Magic Mushroom Chocolates

Does psilocybin lose its potency through heating?

Psilocybin begins to degrade at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius. This is why it is important to melt chocolate using a bain-marie and allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding the mushrooms. When done correctly, the vast majority of active compounds remain intact.

Can I use truffles instead of mushrooms?

Yes, dried magic truffles work perfectly in chocolate recipes. Bear in mind that truffles are generally less potent than dried mushrooms, so adjust your dosage accordingly. Grind the dried truffles into a fine powder for the best distribution.

How long do magic mushroom chocolates last?

Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, they will keep for up to four weeks. Frozen, they can be stored for several months without significant loss of potency. Always label clearly with the date and dosage per piece.

Which chocolate is best suited?

Dark chocolate with 70% cocoa or above works best. The intense flavour effectively masks the earthy taste. Avoid white chocolate if you want to minimise the flavour, as it provides less masking. Ceremonial cacao is an authentic alternative.

How many grams of mushrooms per chocolate?

This depends on your total dosage and the number of chocolates. Divide the total weight of dried mushrooms by the number of pieces. An accurate kitchen scale is essential. Start with a low dosage if you are new to this.

Can I use fresh mushrooms?

No, always use dried mushrooms or truffles. Fresh specimens contain up to 90% water, which will cause the chocolate to split and form lumps. Dry them thoroughly first (preferably using a dehydrator on a low temperature setting) before processing.

Which mushroom strain is best for chocolates?

Golden Teacher and B+ are popular choices due to their predictable potency and mild flavour. You can easily grow them with a Cubensis grow kit. Feeling more adventurous? Try a Copelandia grow kit, but adjust the dosage significantly.

Are magic mushroom chocolates legal?

Legality depends on the ingredients used and your location. In the Netherlands, fresh psilocybin mushrooms are prohibited, but magic truffles are legal. Growing with grow kits for research purposes exists in a legal grey area. Always check local legislation.
