Cannabis Seeds for Beginners: Types, Germination and Storage

Last updated: June 2026
This guide is regularly reviewed with new insights on cannabis seeds and growing.

First Things First: What Is Allowed?

Cannabis seeds themselves are freely available in the Netherlands. Growing is more nuanced. In principle, cultivating cannabis in the Netherlands is prohibited, but home growing of up to five plants is tolerated, as long as you voluntarily hand the plants over when the police ask. In Belgium, one plant is tolerated. Professional or large-scale cultivation is punishable and is dealt with severely. So stick to the rules and inform yourself well beforehand.

The Three Types of Cannabis Seeds

Next Level offers a wide range of cannabis seeds. Broadly, they fall into three types, each with its own characteristics.

Type Feature Handy for
Autoflowering Flowers on its own regardless of light hours, often within a few weeks Beginners and anyone wanting quick results
Feminized Genetically bred to produce almost only female plants Anyone who does not want to sort out male plants
CBD Specially bred for a higher CBD content Anyone who prefers CBD-rich varieties

Autoflowering seeds came about by crossing Indica or Sativa plants with the Ruderalis variety. The latter comes from regions with a short summer and therefore flowers automatically, regardless of the number of light hours. The result: a fast-flowering plant that is easy for beginners to handle.

Feminized seeds are genetically adjusted to produce almost exclusively female plants. The sex of a regular cannabis plant only shows at flowering and is determined by the X and Y chromosomes; feminized seeds take that guesswork away. Finally, CBD seeds are bred for a higher content of CBD, one of the best-known cannabinoids. Want to know more about those compounds? Read our blog CBD, THC, HHC and CBG explained.

Storing Cannabis Seeds

Fresh cannabis seeds keep for about a year, provided you store them cool, dry and dark, preferably below 18°C. Freezing is possible, but after longer storage, thawed seeds often lose part of their germination power. For the best result, use fresh seeds where you can.

Germinating Cannabis Seeds in 4 Steps

There is a lot of confusion about germination. It is actually simple if you follow a few steps.

Cannabis seed germination step scheme

  1. Step 1: Moist and dark
Place the seeds between moist (not soaking) kitchen paper on a plate, in a warm, dark spot. Moisture and warmth set germination in motion.
  2. Step 2: Patience
For most seeds the shell cracks open within 48 to 72 hours. Sometimes it takes 5 to 6 days. Be patient and keep the paper moist.
  3. Step 3: Wait for the root
The seeds are ready to plant once the white root is visible through the crack in the shell. Do not touch the fragile root.
  4. Step 4: Plant carefully
Plant the seed root-down in airy, light soil. Be careful: a damaged root can harm the young plant.

Tip: A cannabis plant lives only one season: it germinates, grows, flowers and dies within a year. So plan your grow for the right time of year for the best result.

And After That?

Once you are past germination, the real work begins. For the next steps, and the most common beginner mistakes, we have separate guides: growing weed indoors, growing weed outdoors and 10 common cannabis growing mistakes. Not sure which seeds to choose? Read our cannabis seed buyer's guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cannabis Seeds

Are cannabis seeds legal in the Netherlands?

Cannabis seeds themselves are freely available. Cultivation is in principle prohibited, although home growing of up to five plants is tolerated provided you hand them over on request. Large-scale cultivation is punishable. Always inform yourself about the current rules.

Which cannabis seeds are easiest for beginners?

Autoflowering seeds are often the easiest: they flower on their own, regardless of light hours, and are relatively fast. Feminized seeds are handy because you do not have to sort out male plants.

How long does germination take?

For most seeds the shell cracks open within 48 to 72 hours, sometimes it takes 5 to 6 days. Once the white root is visible, they are ready to plant.

How do I store cannabis seeds?

Cool, dry and dark, preferably below 18°C. That keeps them good for about a year. Freezing is possible, but after long storage thawed seeds often lose some germination power.

What is the difference between feminized and autoflowering?

Feminized is about sex: these seeds produce almost exclusively female plants. Autoflowering is about flowering: these plants flower on their own, regardless of light hours. A seed can be both.

What are CBD cannabis seeds?

CBD seeds are bred for a higher content of CBD, one of the plant's cannabinoids. They are popular with people who prefer CBD-rich varieties over THC-rich ones.
