Traditional Spiced Criollo Cacao Paste – Cinnamon, Cardamom & Amazonian Chili

Criollo is the rarest cacao variety on earth, accounting for less than five percent of global production. The beans in this "Medicine Magic" paste come from small-scale Colombian farms where they’re hand-picked and fermented using traditional techniques. What you get is a cacao that’s remarkably smooth and layered – none of the harsh bitterness you’d find in common varieties.

Beyond the Criollo cacao and natural cacao butter, this paste contains a warming spice blend: cinnamon, cardamom and clove, plus native chili varieties from the Amazon region. The chili doesn’t bring heat – it adds a gentle, lingering warmth that deepens the chocolate flavor. Everything is 100% natural. No flavor enhancers, no extracts, no preservatives.

Processing takes place in the Netherlands, with careful attention to traditional preparation methods. From roasting to grinding to blending the spices – each step shapes the final taste and quality of the paste.

Key Features: 100% Colombian Criollo cacao – the rarest variety. Traditional spice blend of cinnamon, cardamom, clove and Amazonian chili. Free from extracts, preservatives and artificial additives. Vegan and ethically sourced. Prepared in the Netherlands.

What does this cacao taste and feel like?

✧ Velvety with warm spice depth

The first sip is smooth and full. Cinnamon and cardamom carry the flavor, while the Criollo base provides a gentle chocolate tone without any sharpness. The chili adds no heat – just a pleasant warmth that lingers.

✧ Grounding and clear

The combination of cacao and spices creates a steady, grounding feeling. At the same time, you stay clear and present – no heaviness, just calm awareness. Works well with meditation, breathwork or a creative session.

✧ Slow, sustained energy

Ceremonial cacao works differently from coffee. The theobromine in Criollo delivers a gentle, even energy lift that can last for hours – no spike, no crash.

Use and Preparation

One ceremonial serving is 50 grams. Heat 180–200 ml of water or plant-based milk to a maximum of 60°C – boiling isn’t necessary and damages the active compounds. Break the paste into pieces, add it to the warm liquid and blend until smooth and creamy. A touch of honey or agave is fine, but try it plain first. Drink slowly and mindfully, preferably in the morning or early afternoon. Pair with meditation, yoga, breathwork, or simply a quiet moment for yourself.

How should I store ceremonial cacao paste?

Keep the paste in a cool, dry place, ideally below 20°C. Avoid direct sunlight and humid environments. Properly stored, the paste stays good for at least twelve months. After opening, use within three months for the best flavor.

Can I combine this cacao with coffee?

You can, but most people use ceremonial cacao as a coffee replacement. Theobromine works more gradually and evenly than caffeine. If you do combine them, be mindful of the double stimulant effect.

What’s the difference between this and regular cocoa powder?

Ceremonial cacao paste is minimally processed and retains all its natural cacao butter. Regular cocoa powder is defatted and often alkalized, which strips out many active compounds. You’ll notice the difference in taste, texture and overall effect. Read more in our article about the differences between cacao powder and cacao paste.

Is this cacao suitable for a cacao ceremony?

Yes, this paste is specifically formulated for ceremonial use. The 50-gram serving is a full ceremonial dose. The Criollo variety and traditional spice blend make it particularly well-suited for intentional settings. Our guide walks you through hosting a cacao ceremony in 7 easy steps.
