Do I need a heating mat for my mushroom grow kit?
A heating mat is not strictly required but becomes essential when your room temperature regularly drops below 20°C (68°F). Magic mushroom grow kits need a stable temperature between 20 and 24°C to colonize and fruit properly. During autumn and winter months, or in unheated rooms such as garages and basements, the substrate can get too cold for the mycelium to remain active. The heating mat provides gentle, consistent warmth from below that keeps conditions in the optimal range.
Which heating mat size should I choose for my grow kit?
The heating mat comes in two sizes matched to standard grow kit dimensions. The Medium mat fits 1200cc grow kits, which is the most common size in our range. The Large mat is designed for the bigger 2100cc kits. Always select the size that corresponds to your kit so the heat distributes evenly across the bottom of the grow container.
How do I set up the heating mat correctly to avoid overheating?
Place the heating mat on a flat, dry surface and create an air gap of 3 to 4 centimetres between the mat and the bottom of your grow kit. You can use a small rack, a book, or an upturned plate as a spacer. This air layer prevents direct contact, which would overheat the substrate and potentially kill the mycelium. The mat does not need to run continuously; a timer set to cycle on and off can help maintain a steady 22°C near the kit.
