Black Leather Bamboo Tepi - Handcrafted Ceremonial Instrument
Shirley lives in the northeastern state of Maranhão in Brazil and makes these tepis by combining bamboo with leather. The bamboo tubes form the base, leather is wrapped around and secured. Then come the pyrography details - burned patterns applied to the leather with a hot pen. The result is a tepi that feels sturdier than bamboo alone.
The leather provides extra grip and protects the bamboo from scratches. The pyrography is purely decorative but gives each piece its own character. Shirley works without templates, so patterns differ between tepis. The black color comes from the leather treatment and burning - it's not paint or coating.
