Meranti Hardwood Kuripe - Durable Ceremonial Instrument

Meranti is a tropical hardwood that grows in Indonesia. It has a reddish-brown color and is a bit heavier than bamboo but also even stronger. This kuripe is carved from a single piece of Meranti, not from two parts glued together.

Carving from a single block takes more time and material. You start with a larger piece of wood and remove everything unnecessary until only the kuripe remains. The inside is drilled and then sanded until the channels are smooth. The result is a kuripe that lasts for years, even with daily use.

Features: Carved from single piece of Meranti wood. Made in Indonesia. No glued parts for extra strength. Reddish-brown hardwood. Smoothly sanded finish. Heavier but sturdier than bamboo.

Meranti Versus Bamboo

✧ Strength and Durability

Meranti is a hardwood, bamboo is actually a grass. That means Meranti is harder and denser. It doesn't break easily, even from a fall. If you're often on the go or use the kuripe intensively, Meranti is the stronger choice.

✧ Feel and Weight

Wood feels warmer than bamboo. It's heavier in your hand, which some people find more pleasant - more sense of substance.

Use and Care

Use like any kuripe: fill, place, blow through. Rinse after use with cold or lukewarm water. Meranti can handle more than bamboo, but avoid prolonged soaking anyway. Dry well before storage. The wood may darken somewhat over time from use - this is normal and doesn't affect function.

What is meranti and why is it suitable for a kuripe?

Meranti is a tropical hardwood from Indonesia with a reddish-brown colour. It is harder and denser than bamboo, so it does not break easily, even from a fall. This kuripe is carved from a single piece without glued parts, making it extra strong for intensive daily use.

How does a meranti kuripe differ from a bamboo kuripe?

Meranti is a hardwood while bamboo is technically a grass. Meranti is harder, heavier and denser, providing more sturdiness. It feels warmer in the hand and has more weight. Bamboo is lighter and more affordable. For those who travel or use intensively, meranti is the stronger choice. Read more about rapé use in our rapé guide.

Does a meranti kuripe require special maintenance?

Meranti can handle more than bamboo, but avoid prolonged soaking in water. Rinse after use with cold or lukewarm water and dry well. Note: our kuripe brush does not fit this meranti kuripe due to narrower channels. The wood may darken somewhat over time from use, which is normal.
