Kuntanawa Kuripe with Handcarved Bird Design

The Kuntanawa tribe lives deep in the Brazilian Amazon and makes kuripes using traditional methods. This Black Bird kuripe is carved from bamboo and then shaped into the silhouette of a bird. Each piece is unique - the makers work without exact templates, so you'll always get your own authentic piece.

The bamboo is first dried, then cut and sanded. Bird features are added by hand: wings, head, tail. It takes days to complete one kuripe. The Kuntanawa use natural materials for finishing, which means color nuances can vary between different kuripes.

Features: Handmade by Kuntanawa tribe. Bird shape with unique details. Sturdy bamboo base. Traditional production method. No two kuripes identical.

Fit and Use

The Kuntanawa make these kuripes in sizes that work for most people, but everyone's nose anatomy differs. Test the fit first without rapé to check if it sits comfortably. The bird shaping is decorative but doesn't affect function - the inner tubes are simply straight and smooth like any kuripe.

Use and Care

Fill the short end with rapé, place in your nostril and blow through the long end. Clean after use with cold water and our kuripe & tepi brush and dry completely. This kuripe is very sturdy, but the decorations are fragile to hard impacts, so handle the kuripe with care. Store preferably in a soft pouch or cloth.

Who are the Kuntanawa and why do they make kuripes?

The Kuntanawa are an indigenous tribe from the Brazilian Amazon who craft ceremonial tools using centuries-old methods. Each kuripe is hand-carved from bamboo, a process that takes days to complete. The bird motif on this Black Bird kuripe refers to spiritual symbolism from their culture. Read more about indigenous tribal traditions and rapé.

Does the bird carving affect how the kuripe works?

No, the decorations are purely on the exterior. The inner tubes are straight and smooth, just like any other kuripe. The bird design gives the piece a unique character and may provide extra grip, but the flow of rapé is not affected.

How do you store a hand-carved Kuntanawa kuripe?

Store the kuripe preferably in a soft pouch or cloth to protect the decorative details. Clean after use with cold water and a kuripe brush, and let it dry completely. The decorations are vulnerable to hard impacts, so handle with care.
