Kuntanawa Rapé Container in Sage Green - Handmade Pottery

Bamboo forms the core of this container, but you don't see it - the entire outside is covered with a thick layer of clay in sage green and golden tones. These are the Kuntanawa colors, derived from natural pigments from the Amazon. Below the lid, a central circle with a caapi symbol, surrounded by smaller circles and waves. Below the lid follow feather or leaf motifs running vertically along the container.

The middle section has ribbed rings stacking horizontally over each other. This isn't decoration but structure - each ring is separately formed and stacked. It provides grip and visual interest. The bottom part carries geometric patterns: triangles, stars, zigzag lines, deeply carved into the clay. The transition from green to gold flows naturally - sometimes hard, sometimes gradual, depending on how the maker mixed the colors.

Features: Bamboo base with full clay covering. Caapi symbol surrounded by sage green and golden colors. Feather/leaf motifs along sides. Ribbed middle section. Geometric patterns at bottom. Handmade by Tete Pawã in Kuntanawa style. Height about 12-14cm.

Kuntanawa Symbols and Meaning

The Kuntanawa tribe from western Brazil has its own symbolism that the Tete Pawã collective respects in these containers. The caapi symbol refers to transformation and spiritual connection. Feathers indicate freedom, light and energy. The geometric patterns at the bottom - triangles and zigzags - represent mountains and waterways from their territory. These aren't random decorations but symbols that carry meaning.

Bamboo with Clay: Practical and Decorative

✧ Why Bamboo?

Bamboo is light and grows quickly in the Amazon. It naturally has a sturdy, hollow structure, ideal for containers. The clay covering ensures the bamboo stays protected from moisture and impacts.

✧ Clay as Seal

The clay layer seals the bamboo. This keeps the contents dry and protected. The lid fits tightly on the opening.

Use and Maintenance

Unscrew the lid from the container, fill with powder, place the lid back. Wipe dust away with dry cloth. For stubborn dirt: use a lightly damp cloth and let it dry well afterwards. Store in dry place and out of the sun.

How does the sage green container differ from the grey version?

The sage green has sage and golden tones, while the grey has dark grey to black clay decoration with a green crystal. In terms of size and construction they are identical: bamboo base, full clay covering, approximately 12-14cm tall. The choice is purely aesthetic and personal.

How do you store rapé in a clay-covered container?

The clay layer seals the bamboo and keeps the contents dry. Unscrew the lid, fill with powder and close. Wipe dust with a dry cloth. Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight, as this can fade the colours. Read more about rapé storage in our rapé handbook.
