Phyllomedusa Bicolor from the Matsés Tribe

Kambo is the skin secretion of Phyllomedusa bicolor, a tree frog from the Amazon rainforest. This frog is also known as the Giant Monkey Tree Frog or Giant Leaf Frog. The secretion has been collected and used by indigenous tribes for centuries.

The material is collected from wild frogs in the rainforest. The Matses tribe has developed a method where the frogs are treated carefully and returned unharmed to their natural habitat after collection. The frogs have no natural predators and behave calmly during the process.

Key features: Natural skin secretion from wild Phyllomedusa bicolor from Amazon. Collected by Matses tribe using ethical method. Frogs are treated with respect and returned unharmed. Dried traditionally on small sticks. Frogs receive minimum 3 months rest between collections.

The collection process

Collection happens at sunrise. A mating call is imitated, bringing the frogs down from the trees. Phyllomedusa bicolor is remarkably passive and comfortable when held—likely because it has no natural predators. A soft cord is attached to each leg, causing minimal stress.

The secretion is gently collected from the frog's back. Consideration is given to the amount the frog needs for potential self-defense. After collection, the frog calmly returns to its habitat. The cords leave small white marks on the skin—when someone sees these marks, they know the frog was recently collected and should be left alone. These marks fade in about three months, indicating the natural rest period before the frog may be approached again.

Respect for the frog

Local communities treat the frogs with great care and respect. They believe that harming the frog can anger the animal spirits with whom they live closely. This cultural belief ensures that collection remains sustainable and the frog's welfare remains central.

What is Kambo and which animal does it come from?

Kambo is the natural skin secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor, also known as the Giant Monkey Tree Frog or Giant Leaf Frog. This large tree frog lives in the Amazon rainforest and has been valued by indigenous tribes for centuries. The secretion is collected from wild frogs and dried on small sticks. Learn about the complete ethical process in our Kambo and Matses tribe guide.

How is Kambo ethically collected by the Matses tribe?

Collection happens at sunrise by imitating the frog's mating call. The Phyllomedusa bicolor is remarkably calm when held, likely because it has no natural predators. A soft cord is attached to each leg with minimal stress, and the secretion is gently collected from the back. The frog is then returned unharmed to its habitat, and local communities treat the animals with great care and respect.

How do you store a Kambo stick?

Store the Kambo stick in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The dried secretion on the stick maintains its properties when stored properly in a sealed container. Avoid exposure to moisture, as humidity can degrade the material. Keep it in its original packaging or wrapped in clean, dry material.

Why does the Phyllomedusa bicolor have no natural predators?

The Phyllomedusa bicolor produces a bioactive skin secretion that deters potential predators, which is why it has virtually no natural enemies in the rainforest. This also explains the frog's remarkably calm behavior when handled during collection. The absence of predation pressure means the species maintains healthy populations, as detailed in our Kambo documentation.

Why are the frogs given at least three months of rest between collections?

After collection, small white marks from the cords remain visible on the frog's skin. These marks serve as a natural indicator system: when someone spots a frog with visible marks, they know it was recently collected and must be left alone. The marks fade in approximately three months, which serves as the natural rest period before the frog may be approached again. This system ensures sustainable and ethical harvesting.

First empty stomach, use Kambo during full moon at daylight. The right intentions, 2 L mineral water, lighter or candles. Blankets the best spot on earth you know of! Half an hour before you make the spots on your body, drink 1 1/2 L water put some nice music on and make the Kambo stick a bit wet (just the part you want to use about ? ,dots will come of the stick the size I just showed you. Let the small stick that’s included burn just the tip of it. Use your breath to let it burn like chalk coal No fire ?. Mark the spots quickly after every spot let the coal on your stick burn for the next. If everyone has there spots take your thin part of the burned skin off. When it’s white color skin, you did it right. Make enough kambo by using a small knife and a thee spoon. Make about six or seven dots for every person. To make sure the kambo/water mixture is okay it had to be as sticky if it would come out of your nose (?). Put the dots on twoxtwo. Millimeters flat when you put it on. When there all put into place. Use some bandages to keep the dots on the spots. Place the dots quickly and the bandage too. Give everybody some off there own space after the kambo start (that’s right away) keep 1/2 L water with you. Happy vomiting everyone ?? remember that what will come up hade to be that way. After twenty minutes take the bandage off. Some people have a bit of a swollen mouth ( That’s called the Kiss of the Frog) You’re all will feel stronger than ever before within one and a half hour you will feel the energy frequency of the Amazon ?
