Puyanawa Murici Tsunu

Learn about the Puyanawa Tribe

At the start of the 20th century the Puyanawa inhabited the headwaters of the lower Moa River. After the contact with non-Indians, many died from contracting foreign diseases. Those who survived, were forced to become slaves, and live on lands belonging to a prominent farmer, Colonel Mâncio Lima, and were banned to express any trace of their culture. Puyanawa lost all their knowledge, traditions, and ancient wisdom of how to use their healing plants and sacred medicines. Following the death of Colonel Mâncio Lima in 1950, all people of Puyanawa were freed. With all their traditions lost, they continued to extract and sell rubber. After decades of lost traditions, The Puyanawa tribe’s rebirth began in the 1990s when 385 members came together to revive their culture, language, and traditions. Only 12 members could speak the old Puyanawa language, which has now been brought back to life. Thanks to a lot of effort, the Puyanawa tribes continues to grow, expand, and establish their traditions, values, and territory. If you purchase this rapé, you support the tribe of Puyanawa people.

Slight variations in rapé

Although rapé is made by following a certain recipe, the recipe is seen more so as a guideline rather than something ‘written in stone’. A shaman or medicine man will sometimes slightly alter the ratio of ingredients or the harvest time by following his/her intuition. Please keep in mind that due to the natural qualities of ingredients used in rapé, each batch can naturally vary in strength, scent, or color.

Packaging

In our journey to create a product that is as sustainable as possible, we chose to use glass bottles instead of plastic ones. We strive to contribute as little as possible to the production of plastic (waste), therefore, we would like to ask everyone to keep the delivered Rapé jars and reuse them for other purposes. We are also in the process of developing a recycling program for glass bottles.
