Gelatin Capsules Size 0 - Standard Size for 500mg Filling
These empty gelatin capsules in size 0 have a capacity of approximately 500 milligrams. They consist of two parts that click together: a longer bottom that you fill, and a shorter top that slides over it like a cap. Size 0 is the middle size - not too small to fill, not too large to swallow.
Gelatin is the standard material for capsules because it dissolves well in your stomach. It comes from cattle and is therefore not vegetarian. If you're looking for a plant-based alternative, we also have vegan capsules available.

Use
Pull the capsule apart into two pieces. Fill the longer bottom with your dried herb powder. Press the powder down lightly but don't pack it too full. Slide the top part on until you feel a click. Store filled capsules dry and at room temperature. For faster filling of larger quantities, a capsule machine size 0 is recommended.

With a capacity of approximately 500mg, this size offers enough room for most standard dosages while remaining comfortable to swallow. Size 1 (400mg) is better if you want smaller doses or have difficulty swallowing, while size 00 (650mg) is suitable when you need more volume per capsule. If in doubt, start with size 0 as a safe middle ground.
How do you fill empty capsules without a capsule machine?
Gently pull the two halves of the capsule apart. Place the longer bottom half upright in a small dish or holder so it doesn't tip over. Scoop your finely ground herb powder into it using a small spoon or spatula and press it down lightly. Fill to about three-quarters so the top fits on properly. Click the shorter top half on until you feel resistance. Manual filling works fine for small quantities, but for regular use a capsule machine saves considerable time.
What is the difference between gelatin capsules and vegan capsules?
Gelatin capsules are made from animal collagen (bovine gelatin) and dissolve quickly in the stomach. Vegan capsules consist of HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), a plant-based material that dissolves equally well but is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. In terms of use and fill capacity, they are identical: both sizes fit in the same capsule machines and hold the same amount. The only practical difference is that plant-based capsules can be slightly more sensitive to moisture, so store them extra dry.
