Magic Mushrooms vs Magic Truffles | What You Need to Know

magic mushrooms vs magic truffles

Although magic mushrooms and truffles contain the same psychoactive ingredients and are similar in many ways – after all, they come from the same organism - there are many significant differences to keep in mind before buying or consuming them. This article will cover the legality of magic mushrooms and truffles, their effects, potency, safety, and dosage. After reading this, you will be well versed in the differences between magic mushrooms and magic truffles, and you will be confidently able to share them with your friends, peers, colleagues, or family. It’s good to stay informed, so read on!

The Difference in Appearance Between Magic Mushrooms and Magic Truffles

The first thing you may notice about magic mushrooms and truffles is that they are completely different in their appearance. Magic mushrooms look like, well, typical mushrooms with a stem and a ‘hat’, while magic truffles are smaller, more round-like, and can be quite hard and condensed; they look like something between small rocks and nuts. However, they do come from the same organism, just different parts of it. While magic mushrooms will grow above ground and will be easily visible to the eye, magic truffles hide underneath the ground. To be harvested, magic truffles need to be dug up while magic mushrooms can be picked by hand from above the ground.

Are Magic Mushrooms Stronger Than Magic Truffles?

While a lot of people believe that magic mushrooms are stronger in their effects and potency than magic truffles, research shows that both contain just about the same amount of psilocybin – a psychoactive compound responsible for creating a ‘trip-like’ effect. There are a few theories as to why it could seem like magic truffles are somewhat weaker than magic mushrooms, and one of them is that psilocybin is spread out more evenly with magic truffles while it can be hard to measure and dose magic mushrooms, potentially resulting in the person consuming more psilocybin than they anticipated. Another theory as to why truffles may seem weaker is that magic truffles usually come pre-packaged and are carefully weighed for an accurate dosage with easy-to-follow guidelines and warnings, which can result in them being consumed more responsibly.

Are Magic Truffles Legal in Amsterdam?

are magic truffles legal in amsterdam

Yes, magic truffles are legally sold not only in Amsterdam but throughout the Netherlands as well. They can be found in smartshops in the cities, and can also be ordered online by a variety of suppliers. However, magic mushrooms, although containing the very same psychoactive compound, are illegal to sell or consume in the Netherlands. There are some countries and cities where magic mushrooms are legal, decriminalized, or tolerated for personal use. If you would like to check the legal status of magic mushrooms or magic truffles, Wikipedia offers an insightful list of countries or states and/or cities in the U.S. where you can see the *legal status of psilocybin mushrooms.

*Keep in mind that the information may not be updated, and laws are always subject to change.

Magic Mushroom Dosage vs Magic Truffle Dosage

The most important question to ask yourself when calculating the right dosage for you is: will I use magic mushrooms or truffles fresh or dried? Magic mushrooms are usually consumed dried, while magic truffles are almost always taken fresh. Depending on what you have easier access to, your dosage will largely depend on answering this question first. Why is it important? Because consuming them fresh, you will need to take approximately 3x more the amount than when using them dried to achieve the desired effect.

The next question to ask yourself is: do I want a mild, moderate, or intense trip experience?

A mild trip is anything between 0,5 to 1,5 grams of dried magic mushrooms.

A moderate or normal trip is anything between 1,5 to 2,5 grams of dried magic mushrooms.

Anything above 2,5 grams of dried magic mushrooms is considered a high dose and will create intense effects.

When consuming fresh magic truffles, you can take 3x more of the amount than the above recommendations.

It can be good to keep in mind that the intensity of magic mushrooms or truffles can be experienced differently by each individual, and can be affected by body weight and sensitivity to psilocybin. It’s a good idea to start low first and get familiar with the sensations, feelings, and emotions that come up during the experience in a safe set and setting. (Read more about the set and setting here!)
