Psychotria Viridis | Chacruna | Leaves

Psychotria viridis, also known as chacruna or chacrona, from the Quechuan verb "to mix". This name probably refers to the traditional use of psychotria viridis. The plant belongs to the Rubiaceae (the family of the coffee plant). It is a shrub or small tree with small red fruits and long, narrow leaves. The plant can grow up to 5 meters high. The leaves are about 5-15 centimeters long; this is the part that contains the psychoactive substances.

Main active biochemicals: tryptamine alkaloid N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and beta-carbolines are present in the leaves of P. viridis.

Psychotria viridis is native to the low-lying Amazonian region. It is an evergreen tropical tree or large shrub and grows in full sun to semi-shade. It has large leaves, which are oval with pointed ends. The small brown seeds are sprouted from red berries. It usually grows in very rich and fertile soils. Psychotria viridis contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a psychoactive substance found in many different plant families and thousands of species in the plant kingdom. In Psychotria viridis it is found in the leaves at concentrations ranging from 0.1 - 0.61% with traces of other tryptamines (Ratsch 1998).
