Let's face it, for many of us, there is nothing more tempting than that bar of chocolate. Nowadays you see chocolate everywhere. There are few people who can resist chocolate.
More and more of us are moving towards a healthier lifestyle. As a result, we are leaving more or less milk or white chocolate and are looking for good alternatives. Nowadays, cocoa is seen as Superfood. But you have Cocoa and Cacoa. But what is the difference?
RAW Cacao - Superfood
Cocao is known as the food (or drink) of the Gods! It can be traced back to the Mayan people who were thought to be the first to cultivate the cocoa plant around 400AD.
'Cocao' refers to all food products that come from the cocao bean and that 'RAW' are processed. Raw Cacao can be in the form of cocao beans, cocao butter, paste but mostly cocao powder. Raw cocoa powder is made by cold pressing cocoa beans, this process preserves the living enzymes and removes the fat (cocao butter).
Eating cocao makes you happy! It contains phenylethylamine that is responsible for our mood and pleasure and the same feelings you get when you are in love. It also acts as a stimulant and can improve mental alertness. Cocao is a powerhouse FULL with antioxidants! It also contains large amounts of magnesium, an essential mineral in times of stress and helps you feel more relaxed.
Cacoa - Chocolate
There are many studies into the health benefits of chocolate, but these unfortunately do not refer to the average chocolate bar bought in the store. The 'chocolate' they refer to is much closer to cocoa and also contains dark chocolate.
'Cocoa' looks the same, but there is a big difference. Cocoa powder is the 'raw cocoa' that is roasted at high temperatures. The effect of roasting the cocoa is that the molecular structure changes, reducing the overall nutritional value and destroying the health benefits.
Cocoa powder contains more fiber and calories than Cacoa powder, because more of the nutrients from the whole bean are still intact. Cocoa is an excellent source of monounsaturated fats, cholesterol-free saturated fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, natural carbohydrates and proteins that make it an excellent source of nutrients.
